Synopsis

Set in mid-19th century New York, Henry James's 'Washington Square' introduces Catherine Sloper, a mild-mannered heiress living a comfortable, if somewhat uneventful, life with her domineering and intelligent father, Dr. Austin Sloper. Her quiet existence is upended by the arrival of the charming, but financially unstable, Morris Townsend, who quickly declares his love for Catherine. Dr. Sloper, convinced of Townsend's mercenary motives, vehemently opposes the match, setting off a poignant battle of wills. Catherine, deeply devoted yet caught between her father's disapproval and her affection for Morris, endures a period of immense emotional turmoil. The novel masterfully explores themes of family loyalty, social expectation, and the devastating consequences of paternal overreach and perceived betrayal, all while painting a precise and understated portrait of the era's social dynamics.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its 'matchless social study' and 'extraordinary charm,' 'Washington Square' stands as a beloved classic, distinguished by its profound psychological depth and elegant depiction of human endurance."
