Synopsis

Banana Yoshimoto's "N.P." delves into a complex web of interconnected lives, all revolving around a collection of 100 short stories titled "N.P." penned by a celebrated, yet tragically deceased, Japanese author. The narrative unfolds primarily through the eyes of Kazami, a young woman haunted by the suicide of her American translator boyfriend, Shoji. Shoji, consumed by his work on "N.P.," harbored a dark secret: he was having an affair with the author's daughter, Saki, even as he translated her father's work. As Kazami attempts to understand Shoji's obsession and unravel the mysteries surrounding his death, she finds herself drawn into the eccentric lives of the author's other children – a charismatic and troubled brother, Otohiko, and his estranged sister, Saki – all of whom seem inextricably linked to the enigmatic stories of "N.P." The novel explores themes of forbidden love, incestuous desire, memory, grief, and the profound, often destructive, influence of art on human lives, painting a poignant picture of psychological intimacy and the burdens of a creative legacy.

Critical Reception

"Praised for its ethereal prose and delicate exploration of human connection and loss, 'N.P.' solidified Banana Yoshimoto's status as a master of contemporary Japanese literature."
