Synopsis

Quoyle, a hulking, emotionally inept man, finds his life upended after a series of personal calamities culminate in the death of his unfaithful wife. Encouraged by his formidable Aunt Agnis Hamm, he uproots his two young, troubled daughters, Bunny and Sunshine, from their dreary New York life and journeys to the desolate, windswept fishing village of Killick-Claw, Newfoundland—his ancestral home. There, amidst a community of eccentric, resilient, and often harsh characters, Quoyle reluctantly takes on the role of shipping news reporter for the local rag, The Gammy Bird. As he grapples with the rugged landscape, the unforgiving sea, and the complex, often dark, history of his own family, Quoyle slowly begins to shed his self-pity and discover an unexpected strength and sense of belonging. The novel is a poignant, darkly humorous, and ultimately redemptive tale of finding hope and self-discovery in the most unlikely of places, celebrating the enduring human spirit against the backdrop of a wild, magnificent land.
