Synopsis

In Philip Roth's provocative and metafictional novel, "Operation Shylock," the acclaimed author finds himself in Israel confronted by a doppelgänger also named Philip Roth. This imposter is actively promoting a bizarre and controversial 'Diasporist' movement, advocating for a 'reverse exodus' of Ashkenazi Jews back to Europe. Grappling with the unsettling reality of his own name being used to disseminate such radical ideas, the 'real' Roth feels compelled to intervene. His journey plunges him into a labyrinthine world of Israeli intelligence agents, Palestinian exiles, an accused war criminal, and the enigmatic founder of 'Anti-Semites Anonymous.' As Roth attempts to expose and stop his impersonator, he is forced into a series of increasingly complex and ethically ambiguous situations, ultimately blurring the lines between sanity and madness, truth and fiction, and the very identity of the self. The narrative masterfully interrogates themes of Jewish identity, historical memory, and the volatile political landscape of the Middle East, all while maintaining a signature blend of intellectual rigor and dark humor.

Critical Reception

"Recipient of the PEN/Faulkner Award, 'Operation Shylock' stands as a tour de force of metafiction and satire, cementing Philip Roth's reputation as a daring and intellectually formidable literary figure."
