Synopsis

In contemporary Seoul, two individuals grappling with profound personal crises find an unexpected connection through a Greek language class. A young woman, recently deprived of her mother and the custody of her nine-year-old son, has retreated into a self-imposed silence, her voice lost to her sorrow. Her teacher, a man torn between his Korean and German heritage, faces the terrifying prospect of losing his sight, jeopardizing his independence and sense of self. Both are adrift in their own forms of darkness—her silence mirroring his fading vision. As they tentatively interact within the classroom, a deep, unspoken understanding begins to form. Their shared pain, vulnerability, and search for meaning draw them together, transforming their individual struggles into a journey toward mutual solace and reawakened expression. This novel is a tender exploration of human intimacy, the power of language, and the profound journey from isolation back to connection, demonstrating how shared anguish can forge the most beautiful bonds.
