Synopsis

Tom Perrotta's "Election" is a sharply satirical and darkly comedic novel that plunges into the cutthroat world of a high school presidential race at Winwood High. At its center is the relentlessly ambitious Tracy Flick, a driven student who embodies perfection and relentless self-promotion, even if it means sleeping with her English teacher. Disgusted by Tracy's self-serving nature and perceiving her as unfit to lead, civics teacher Jim McAllister (Mr. M.) decides to intervene. He orchestrates a challenge, convincing popular, good-natured football star Paul Warren to run against Tracy. This intervention, however, sparks unforeseen chaos. Paul's rebellious sister, Tammy, incensed by her brother's manipulated entry into the race and feeling generally disenfranchised, launches her own campaign on an "apathy platform," initially aiming to get expelled. As the election unfolds, what begins as a lesson in democracy devolves into a hilarious and unsettling exposé of human nature, rife with smear tactics, personal vendettas, and scandalous secrets, ultimately questioning the integrity of both the electoral process and the adults ostensibly guiding it.
