Synopsis

Set in Cardiff, Wales in 1952, "The Fortune Men" plunges readers into the harrowing true story of Mahmood Mattan, a young Somali sailor wrongly accused of murdering Violet Volacki, a shopkeeper in the vibrant Tiger Bay district. Despite his past as a gambler and petty thief, Mahmood is steadfast in his innocence, trusting in the British justice system to exonerate him. However, his confidence erodes as a deeply flawed investigation, blatant racial prejudice, and a legal process stacked against him begin to paint a grim picture. A father of three, Mahmood finds himself caught in a terrifying fight for his life, facing an inhumane system that seems determined to condemn him regardless of the truth. Nadifa Mohamed masterfully reconstructs this tragic miscarriage of justice, revealing the devastating impact of institutional racism and the profound vulnerability of an individual against a corrupt state apparatus. This haunting narrative explores themes of identity, prejudice, and the desperate struggle for justice in the shadow of the gallows.
