Humanity faces an existential crisis: wormhole technology has revealed that our sun is doomed to die in a mere five million years, a fate attributed to the enigmatic and all-powerful Xeelee, a race of superbeings who are thought to control the very fabric of the universe. In the face of such overwhelming cosmic dread, the eccentric and immensely wealthy cult known as the Superet initiates two daring, desperate projects. One, the 'Ring' project, sees a vast, sentient generation ship, the 'Great Northern,' embarked on an epic journey to the edge of the galaxy, seeking answers and perhaps salvation from the Xeelee themselves. The other project involves a dedicated team focused on manipulating the wormhole network to somehow avert the sun's demise. As characters spanning millennia grapple with mind-bending physics, the vastness of space and time, and the indifferent power of the Xeelee, 'Ring' delves into profound questions of existence, humanity's place in the cosmos, and the ultimate destiny of life in a universe governed by unimaginable forces.
