The Fountains of Paradise

Synopsis

In the 22nd century, visionary engineer Vannevar Morgan embarks on the most ambitious project ever conceived: the construction of a Space Elevator, a towering ribbon stretching 36,000 kilometers from Earth's equatorial surface to a geostationary satellite. His chosen site, the volcanic island of Taprobane (a futuristic Sri Lanka), presents not only immense engineering challenges but also deep-seated geopolitical and religious obstacles, as the island is home to an ancient Buddhist monastery. Morgan must contend with skeptical governments, environmental extremists, and the spiritual leaders of the monastery who believe the sacred peak of Sri Kanda should remain untouched. As the project unfolds, Clarke weaves in themes of humanity's expansion into space, the potential for technological utopia, and the complex interplay between science, faith, and progress. The narrative explores the immense dedication required for such a monumental undertaking and questions the future of humanity when faced with the boundless opportunities of the cosmos, all while confronting an unexpected, ancient intelligence within our solar system.

Critical Reception
