Peter Grant's life as a probationary constable in the Metropolitan Police takes an extraordinary turn when he attempts to take a statement from a murder witness who happens to be a ghost. This bizarre encounter brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, the last officially sanctioned English wizard and head of a covert branch of the Met dedicated to crimes of magic and the uncanny.
