Synopsis

Thelonius 'Monk' Ellison is a brilliant Black author whose intelligent, experimental novels are consistently overlooked by the mainstream, which prefers simplistic narratives about Black trauma. Faced with dwindling sales, family crises, and an agent who suggests he isn't 'Black enough,' Monk reaches his breaking point. In a fit of satirical rage, he crafts a deliberately stereotypical novel, 'My Pathology,' under a pseudonym, intending to expose the publishing industry's narrow-minded expectations. To his horror, the book becomes a runaway bestseller, showered with critical acclaim and even a major literary award. As Monk grapples with the absurd success of his own parody, he is forced to confront profound questions about identity, authenticity, race, and the commodification of culture, all while navigating the increasingly tangled web of his double life. The novel is a scathing, hilarious, and deeply insightful critique of racial prejudice and the performative aspects of identity in contemporary America.

"Praised as a 'classic' and 'seminal' work, Percival Everett's "Erasure" stands as one of the most original and forceful literary critiques of race, identity, and the publishing world in the 21st century."
