Synopsis

In the sprawling, often melancholic world of St. Cloud's orphanage in rural Maine, Homer Wells is an anomaly – an unadoptable boy who repeatedly returns, finding his true home within its walls. Under the unconventional mentorship of Dr. Wilbur Larch, an ether-addicted obstetrician and abortionist, Homer receives a unique education, learning both medicine and the complexities of human compassion. Despite his reluctance to perform abortions, a practice central to Larch's ethos of providing choices to desperate women, Homer becomes Larch's spiritual heir. His yearning for a life beyond the orphanage leads him to the lush apple orchards and cider house of the Winslow family, where he falls into a profound, forbidden love with Candy Kendall, the girlfriend of his closest friend, Wally Worthington. 'The Cider House Rules' delves into profound ethical dilemmas, questioning what it means to be good, to belong, and to make difficult moral choices in a world that rarely offers easy answers. It's a poignant exploration of identity, family, and the search for one's place in a world filled with both harsh realities and unexpected tenderness.
