In a bleak 2045, humanity largely escapes its grim reality by plugging into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual universe. Orphaned teenager Wade Watts, like millions, dedicates his life to deciphering the ultimate puzzle left by OASIS creator James Halliday: an elaborate Easter egg hidden within the simulation. This quest, known as the 'Egg Hunt,' promises the finder unimaginable wealth and control over the OASIS itself. Halliday's challenges are steeped in 1980s pop culture, a deep obsession of Wade's. When Wade uncovers the first of three keys, he catapults into a dangerous race against time, not only competing with fellow 'gunters' but also an oppressive corporate entity, IOI, willing to commit murder to seize the prize. As the lines between virtual and real blur, Wade must confront the very world he's always sought to escape, realizing that the ultimate victory might demand more than just virtual prowess—it might require a stand in reality.
