Synopsis

Picking up after the groundbreaking events of 'Titan,' John Varley's 'Wizard' plunges deeper into the mind-bending reality of Gaea, the colossal, sentient ring-world orbiting Saturn. Cirocco Jones, now inexplicably Gaea's 'Wizard,' finds herself burdened with an unimaginable responsibility: to interpret and manage the whims of a capricious, god-like entity that is both creator and destroyer. As Gaea's erratic moods threaten to reshape its internal landscape and the lives of its inhabitants, Cirocco must navigate treacherous political landscapes among the diverse sentient species, all while grappling with Gaea's alien logic and its often-insane demands. This sequel expands on the trilogy's themes of evolution, survival, and the profound challenges of communicating with an utterly alien intelligence, forcing Cirocco to make impossible choices that dictate the fate of entire civilizations and perhaps Gaea itself.

Critical Reception

"As the powerful follow-up to 'Titan,' 'Wizard' solidified John Varley's Gaea trilogy as an imaginative titan in science fiction, celebrated for its boundless creativity, audacious concepts of sentient worlds, and its enduring philosophical depth."
