Synopsis

Detective Sergeant Peter Pascoe eagerly anticipates a relaxing reunion with old university friends in the seemingly idyllic, sleepy village of Thorton Lacey. However, the pastoral calm is brutally shattered when he stumbles upon a horrific scene: three bodies, including two of his closest acquaintances, brutally murdered. What began as a nostalgic escape quickly transforms into a gruesome crime scene, placing Pascoe in an impossible position. Out of his jurisdiction and officially ordered back to Yorkshire, he faces a profound moral quandary. The local constable, though well-meaning, appears woefully unprepared to untangle the complex web of motives Pascoe instinctively feels lies beneath the surface of this shocking crime. Driven by a fierce loyalty to his deceased friends and a deep-seated conviction that the true killer's intent will be missed by an outsider, Pascoe defies orders, risking his career and reputation. As he delves deeper into the lives and closely guarded secrets of his estranged circle, Pascoe unearths a toxic brew of old rivalries, unrequited love, and long-simmering resentments, forcing him to confront the dark passions lurking beneath the veneer of friendship and respectability.
