Synopsis

In 1950, a young, ambitious doctor named Norton Perina embarks on an expedition to a remote Micronesian island, driven by rumors of a lost tribe possessing an astonishing secret. There, he encounters the U’la, a reclusive forest-dwelling people who appear to defy aging, achieving a form of immortality that preserves the body but leaves the mind in a state of arrested development. Perina, in his quest for scientific glory, uncovers the biological key to their longevity. His discovery propels him to international fame and success upon his return to America, revolutionizing medicine and reshaping societal perceptions of life and death. However, this triumph comes at an immense and tragic cost, not only for the isolated U’la, whose world is irrevocably altered by his intrusion, but also for Perina himself, whose moral compromises and ethical failings are laid bare in a retrospective narrative that exposes the dark underbelly of scientific ambition and the devastating consequences of cultural collision.

Critical Reception

"Hanya Yanagihara's debut novel is a masterfully unsettling and morally complex exploration that provoked widespread discussion on scientific ethics, colonial exploitation, and the tragic consequences of humanity's obsession with youth and immortality."
