Synopsis

In post-war Germany, 15-year-old Michael Berg encounters Hanna Schmitz, a woman twice his age, who nurses him back to health from an illness. An intense and secretive affair blossoms between them, marked by Hanna's ritualistic demand for Michael to read aloud to her before their passionate encounters. Their clandestine relationship abruptly ends when Hanna mysteriously disappears. Years later, as a law student observing a war crimes trial, Michael is shocked to find Hanna in the dock, accused of horrific atrocities committed as an SS guard during the Holocaust. As the trial unfolds, Michael grapples with the profound moral complexities of his past love, the devastating revelations about Hanna's actions, and a secret that could potentially alter the course of justice. The novel provocatively explores themes of generational guilt, responsibility, literacy, and the impossibility of true understanding between individuals and across history.

Critical Reception
