Synopsis

Set on December 23, 1971, amidst a looming Chicago winter storm, "Crossroads" plunges into the tumultuous lives of the Hildebrandt family. Russ Hildebrandt, an associate pastor, is on the precipice of escaping his joyless marriage, unaware his wife, Marion, harbors her own profound secrets and desires for liberation. Their children are navigating equally complex paths: Clem, home from college, is consumed by moral absolutism and a decision that will challenge his father; Becky, once the popular high school queen, has embraced the counterculture; and the brilliant younger brother, Perry, a former drug dealer, grapples with a newfound desire for self-improvement. Each Hildebrandt seeks personal freedom, yet their intertwined lives and individual quests threaten to complicate, or even destroy, one another. Franzen masterfully interweaves their perspectives, capturing a Midwestern family at a critical juncture of moral and personal crisis, with a compelling blend of humor, complexity, and unexpected warmth that resonates deeply with contemporary concerns.

Critical Reception

"Hailed as a triumphant return to form and an expansive, compassionate evolution of Jonathan Franzen's signature style, 'Crossroads' has been lauded as a profound exploration of family, faith, and freedom in the American Midwest."
