In the enigmatic and perilous expanse known as Area X, an ecological anomaly has consumed a stretch of coastline for decades, isolating it from humanity. Nature has reclaimed all vestiges of civilization within its borders, but something far stranger is at play. Previous expeditions into Area X have ended in tragedy: mass suicides, violent betrayals, or fatal illnesses. The twelfth expedition, an all-female team comprising a biologist, an anthropologist, a surveyor, and a psychologist (their de facto leader), ventures into this surreal and mutable landscape. Tasked with mapping the terrain and observing its bizarre phenomena, the biologist, our narrator, soon confronts a world that defies logic and understanding. A massive, inverted tower structure, strange glowing flora, and a pervasive, hypnotic 'brightness' challenge their sanity and perception. As Area X begins to alter them both physically and mentally, the women must not only contend with the external threats but also the deepening paranoia and hidden agendas within their own ranks, all while struggling to understand the true nature of this otherworldly contagion and their place within its ever-shifting ecosystem.
