Synopsis

Set within the rigid and oppressive confines of the Leoncio Prado Military Academy in Lima, Peru, Mario Vargas Llosa's debut novel, "The Time of the Hero," plunges into the brutal world of adolescent cadets. A group of four rebellious cadets, seeking to escape the crushing boredom and stifling discipline, form an inner circle that inadvertently ignites a chain of events starting with a theft and escalating to murder and suicide. The narrative masterfully dissects the psychological and social dynamics of the academy, exposing the harsh realities of brutal initiation rites, illicit gambling, and perilous drinking contests. Through the intertwined perspectives of its characters, the novel critically examines a paradoxical military code that, whether adhered to or defied, inevitably leads to destruction. This raw portrayal of a nightmare existence, where machismo, corruption, and violence are ingrained, shocked Peru upon its 1962 release, leading to public book burnings, yet simultaneously earned international acclaim for its powerful and accurate depiction of youth under duress.

Critical Reception

"A seminal work of Latin American literature, the novel's initial controversial reception solidified its status as a fearless critique of institutionalized violence and hypocrisy, earning it enduring global recognition."

Adaptations

The book was adapted into a 1985 Peruvian film directed by Francisco J. Lombardi, titled "La Ciudad y los Perros" (The City and the Dogs), which was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
