Synopsis

María Dolz finds solace in observing a seemingly perfect couple each morning at her local café. Their idyllic bond offers a momentary escape from her own unfulfilled life. However, this detached observation shatters when the husband, Miguel Desvern, is brutally murdered. Compelled by a strange empathy, María approaches the widowed Luisa to offer condolences, initiating an intricate and morally ambiguous entanglement. Invited into Luisa's grieving home, María unexpectedly falls for Javier, a close friend of the deceased, who soon reveals unsettling details about Miguel's life and the circumstances surrounding his death. As María delves deeper into this newfound relationship and the lingering mystery, the novel transforms from a traditional murder mystery into a profound metaphysical inquiry. Marías masterfully explores the elusive nature of truth, the complexities of love and loss, the role of chance and intention, and the unsettling questions of how one should live and remember the dead. The narrative interrogates the stories we tell ourselves and others, blurring the lines between observation, participation, and moral complicity.
