Synopsis

In "White Gold Wielder," the climactic final installment of Stephen R. Donaldson's Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the leper-turned-savior finds himself facing his ultimate destiny. Despite the devastating setback suffered on the Isle of The One Tree, Covenant and his companions understand that their only path forward is to return to the Land and confront Lord Foul, the Despiser, directly. Mhoram's prophetic words echo in Covenant's mind: "…In the end, you must return to the Land." After an arduous overland journey, the company finally reaches Revelstone, a site of both past triumphs and current perils. A fiery confrontation with Gibbon Raver serves as a catalyst, forcing Covenant to finally come to terms with—and master—the awesome, potentially destructive power he wields through his white gold ring. As the final battle against Lord Foul looms, Thomas Covenant, armed with a profound, newfound understanding, prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice, determined to either save the Land or witness its final ruin.

Critical Reception

"As the powerful conclusion to one of dark fantasy's most iconic and morally complex sagas, 'White Gold Wielder' is celebrated for its ambitious scope, philosophical depth, and relentless exploration of heroism and despair."
