Synopsis

In the grimy underbelly of 1958 Los Angeles, Lieutenant Dave Klein is a law unto himself – a brutal enforcer, slumlord, and bagman whose cynical worldview perfectly mirrors the city's corrupt heart. He operates with impunity, navigating a labyrinth of killings, beatings, and bribes. However, his carefully constructed kingdom of depravity crumbles when federal investigators target the LAPD for widespread corruption. Klein, a notorious "bad cop," is unwittingly made bait, thrust into a desperate fight for survival. He finds himself cornered by vengeful politicians, ruthless LAPD brass, powerful racketeers, and cutthroat drug kingpins, all desperate to bury their own secrets. As the net tightens, Klein, facing his own mortality, is forced to confront the monstrous ambition and perversion that defined his world and, by extension, himself. With his clipped, unforgiving narration, Klein guides readers through a visceral journey where every alliance is fleeting and every secret lethal, in a shattering quest to escape the hell he helped create.

Critical Reception

"Often cited as a chilling masterpiece, "White Jazz" is celebrated for its unflinching portrayal of institutional corruption and its groundbreaking, staccato prose that defines the modern noir aesthetic."
