Synopsis

Set against the vibrant, tumultuous backdrop of 16th-century Istanbul, Orhan Pamuk's "My Name Is Red" unfurls a captivating tale of art, murder, and forbidden love. When the Ottoman Sultan commissions a lavish, illuminated book blending traditional Islamic aesthetics with controversial European techniques, a clandestine group of master miniaturists is assembled. However, the project's secrecy and the heretical nature of its style lead to tragedy when one of the artists is brutally murdered, his body thrown into a well. The Sultan demands the killer be found within three days. The narrative unfolds through a chorus of unique voices—including the victim, the murderer, the Sufi dervishes, and even colors and objects—as 'Black,' a returning miniaturist and the beloved Shekure's suitor, is tasked with uncovering the truth. This intricate mystery delves deep into philosophical questions about art, individuality, tradition versus innovation, religious piety, and the very act of seeing and representing the world.

Critical Reception

"A postmodern masterpiece, "My Name Is Red" is widely celebrated for its innovative narrative structure, profound exploration of art and identity, and its pivotal role in establishing Orhan Pamuk as a global literary phenomenon, contributing to his Nobel Prize in Literature."
