Synopsis

Following the sudden death of his host and fellow English émigré, Sir Francis Hinsley, in Hollywood, the unassuming and aspiring poet Dennis Barlow finds himself entangled in the macabre and meticulously orchestrated world of Whispering Glades Memorial Park. Tasked with arranging Sir Francis's funeral, Dennis is immediately struck by the park's surreal blend of consumerism, saccharine sentimentality, and the American 'way of death.' He soon falls for Aimée Thanatogenos, a naive and emotionally stunted cosmetician working at Whispering Glades, who is torn between Dennis's intellectual charm and the pompous, spiritual rhetoric of Mr. Joyboy, her embalmer superior. As Dennis navigates the absurd rituals and superficial pieties of this death industry, the novel escalates into a darkly comedic and increasingly desperate love triangle, culminating in a tragicomic resolution that mercilessly satirizes societal hypocrisy, the commercialization of grief, and the illusion of eternal bliss manufactured by the Californian dream.

Critical Reception
