Synopsis

Eugene Henderson, a hulking, wealthy, and deeply discontented American in his fifties, is plagued by an insatiable inner voice crying, "I want, I want!" Feeling his life to be a spiritual void, a profound failure despite material success, he impulsively abandons his suburban existence and embarks on a transformative journey to Africa. Driven by a desperate search for meaning, Henderson encounters two distinct tribes, the Arnewi and the Wariri, whose ancient customs and perspectives radically challenge his Western sensibilities. His boisterous and often clumsy attempts to help them lead to unexpected consequences, culminating in him being hailed as a rain king due to a fortunate accident. Under the tutelage of the wise but enigmatic King Dahfu, Henderson grapples with existential questions of life, death, identity, and the untamed nature of the human spirit. This vibrant and often comedic novel is a profound exploration of a man's arduous quest for self-discovery and redemption, finding profound lessons in the heart of an unfamiliar continent.

Critical Reception
