Synopsis

In A. M. Homes's explosive novel, "Music for Torching," the seemingly perfect facade of suburban life is set ablaze—quite literally. Paul and Elaine, a couple trapped in the anxious entropy of their "good life," make the drastic decision to burn down their own house. This incendiary act plunges them into a darkly humorous and increasingly chaotic journey, forcing them to confront the fragile foundations of their marriage and sanity. As they navigate the aftermath, their world becomes a surreal carnival of bizarre encounters: from a Stepford Wife-esque neighbor and an alluring police officer, to a bizarre housecleaning team in space suits and a hostage situation at a school. Homes masterfully crafts a narrative that morphs the quiet terrors of domesticity into a fantastical frenzy. With outrageously flawed yet deeply human characters, the novel is a searing, often uncomfortable, exploration of dissatisfaction, identity, and the lengths to which people will go to escape the mundane.

Critical Reception

"A. M. Homes's "Music for Torching" is widely lauded for its fearless, darkly comedic, and unsettling examination of American suburban life pushed to its most extreme and absurd limits, solidifying her reputation as a master chronicler of contemporary social anxieties."
