Synopsis

The fragile peace of the galaxy shatters when Earth's military mission on the planet Bezer'ej inadvertently orchestrates the genocide of its indigenous species, the bezeri. This catastrophic act ignites the wrath of the powerful wess'har protectors, who had vowed to safeguard the planet's native life, leaving two alien races poised on the precipice of war. However, a far greater reckoning looms. From the 'World Before' – the ancestral home of the wess'har, now distant and almost mythical – an expedition is dispatched to deliver justice. Their judgment will not be confined to the human individuals responsible for the slaughter; Earth itself is deemed accountable for the interstellar crime. As humanity faces an existential threat, its ultimate destiny may hinge on the legacy of Shan Frankland, a former police officer who transcended human limitations before her mysterious self-destruction in the depths of space, her past holding the key to a future no one could have predicted.

Critical Reception

"Karen Traviss's 'The World Before' is celebrated for its uncompromising exploration of moral ambiguity, ecological responsibility, and the complex ethics of first contact, firmly establishing its place as a trenchant voice in contemporary science fiction."
