Synopsis

Carol Shields' final novel, "Unless," presents Reta Winters, a happily married, successful writer whose seemingly idyllic life is abruptly upended when her eldest daughter, Norah, abandons her university studies and takes up residence on a Toronto street corner. Holding a perplexing sign that reads "GOODNESS," Norah refuses to speak, offering no explanation for her radical act of self-imposed silence and exile. Grappling with incomprehension and profound grief, Reta embarks on an intense intellectual and emotional quest to understand Norah's mysterious protest. She revisits her own life, relationships, and intellectual pursuits, engaging in a poignant, often furious, meditation on feminism, literature, the societal devaluation of women's voices, and the elusive nature of 'goodness.' The novel is a deeply introspective and intellectually vibrant exploration of a mother's love, the limitations of language, and the silent cries for meaning in a world that frequently dismisses them.

Critical Reception

"As Carol Shields' final major work, "Unless" stands as a profoundly moving and intellectually rigorous capstone to her celebrated career, solidifying her legacy as a master of intimate human observation and incisive social commentary."
