The Caves of Steel

In a future Earth grotesquely overcrowded and sealed off in colossal subterranean cities, detective Elijah Baley navigates a world where xenophobia against the advanced 'Spacers' is rampant. When a prominent Spacer ambassador, Roj Nemennuh Sarton, is murdered in his fortified residence, Baley, a reluctant and old-fashioned investigator, is assigned to the case. Complicating matters, he's partnered with R. Daneel Olivaw, a humanoid robot of unprecedented sophistication and intelligence, designed by the Spacers themselves. Their investigation takes them through the labyrinthine 'Caves of Steel' – Earth's enclosed cities – and into the heart of the deeply entrenched prejudices between Earthlings and Spacers. Baley must overcome his own biases, decipher the intricate robotic laws, and confront a murder plot that threatens to ignite an interstellar war, all while learning to trust his emotionless, yet profoundly insightful, robotic partner.
