Biography
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Born in Steventon, Hampshire, Austen was primarily educated at home by her father and brothers. Her life was relatively uneventful, spent largely within her family circle, which provided her with rich material for her social observations. She began writing at a young age, completing the first drafts of "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice" before she was 25. Her novels, published anonymously during her lifetime, include "Sense and Sensibility" (1811), "Pride and Prejudice" (1813), "Mansfield Park" (1814), and "Emma" (1815). She later published "Persuasion" and "Northanger Abbey" posthumously in 1817.
