Jack Kornfield, born in New York City in 1945, is a prominent American author and teacher in the Vipassanā movement in American Buddhism. After graduating from Dartmouth College in Asian Studies, he journeyed to Southeast Asia, where he trained as a Buddhist monk under revered masters like Ajahn Chah and Mahasi Sayadaw. He was among the first Westerners to be ordained in the Thai forest tradition. Returning to the United States, Kornfield co-founded the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts, and later the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and has authored numerous bestselling books, blending Eastern spiritual wisdom with Western psychological understanding to make mindfulness and compassion accessible to a broad audience. His teachings emphasize integrating spiritual practice into everyday life and fostering inner peace.
