Biography

Sylvia Nasar is an American economist and author, celebrated for her 1998 biography of Nobel Laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., "A Beautiful Mind." Born in Karlsbad, Germany (now Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic) to a Bavarian mother and a Turkmen father, she spent her formative years across Europe and Asia before her family settled in the U.S. in 1960. She holds degrees in literature from Antioch College and economics from New York University. Before her acclaimed writing career, Nasar worked as an economist for the National Bureau of Economic Research and later as a staff writer at Fortune magazine and an economics correspondent for The New York Times. Her Pulitzer Prize-finalist book, "A Beautiful Mind," was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. She is a professor emerita at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.
