Biography
John Julius Norwich (born John Julius Cooper, 2nd Viscount Norwich) was a distinguished British historian, travel writer, and broadcaster, celebrated for his accessible and engaging narratives of European history. Born in 1929, the son of diplomat Duff Cooper and socialite Lady Diana Cooper, his privileged upbringing and early career in the diplomatic service provided a rich foundation for his later literary pursuits. He resigned from the Foreign Service in 1964 to dedicate himself to writing, becoming a prolific author of popular histories. Norwich was particularly renowned for his comprehensive works on Venice, Byzantium, and Sicily, which brought complex historical periods to life for a wide readership. Beyond his historical writings, he was a gifted travel writer, documenting his journeys through the Mediterranean and beyond, and a familiar voice and face on BBC radio and television, presenting numerous documentaries. He passed away in 2018, leaving a legacy of erudite yet eminently readable historical scholarship.
