Terry McMillan is an acclaimed African-American author known for her contemporary fiction focusing on the lives of black women. Born in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1951, she gained widespread recognition with her 1987 novel "Mama." Her breakthrough came with "Waiting to Exhale" (1992), which became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a successful film starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. This was followed by "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" (1996), also adapted into a film. McMillan’s novels often explore themes of independence, female friendship, love, betrayal, and self-discovery, resonating with a broad audience. She received a B.A. in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended the Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts.
