Anthony Grove "Tony" Hillerman (1925–2008) was an American author of detective novels and non-fiction works, best known for his series of mysteries featuring Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Born in Oklahoma, Hillerman served in the military during World War II, earning a Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. After the war, he worked as a journalist before transitioning to a career in academia and then full-time writing.
