Biography
Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, widely known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. Born into an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, he is best known for the novels 'War and Peace' (1869) and 'Anna Karenina' (1877), which are often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. A moral philosopher and social reformer, Tolstoy's later works focused on Christian anarchism, nonviolent resistance, and a return to simpler, agrarian life. His radical views on religion and society led to his excommunication from the Russian Orthodox Church. He lived a life of profound moral and spiritual searching, ultimately choosing to renounce his property and live as a peasant.
