Biography
Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov (1891–1940) was a renowned Soviet writer, playwright, and physician. Born in Kyiv, he initially practiced medicine, experiences that heavily influenced his early works like "A Country Doctor's Notebook." He moved to Moscow in the early 1920s to pursue a literary career, but his sharp satirical observations of Soviet life quickly brought him into conflict with the authorities. His plays were often banned, and his prose, including his masterpiece "The Master and Margarita," remained unpublished during his lifetime. Despite facing severe censorship and hardship, he continued to write, often under dire circumstances. His work combines biting social commentary with elements of the fantastic, delving into the nature of good and evil, censorship, and the artist's struggle. He died in Moscow, leaving behind a legacy that was only fully recognized decades after his death.
