Akwaeke Emezi (born in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian novelist, performance artist, and video artist, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. Emezi's work often explores themes of Igbo spirituality, gender identity, trauma, and liberation. They gained significant recognition with their debut novel, "Freshwater" (2018), which was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Emezi has since published several acclaimed works across various genres, including young adult fiction ("Pet," "Bitter") and adult fiction ("The Death of Vivek Oji," "You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty").
